Practice, European Standards, AMP Experience: Students of Khomutets College Gained Practical Skills in Cattle Reproduction

On November 12, a scientific and practical conference, "Training of specialists in the reproduction of cows for dairy farms of Ukraine," took place at the Khomutets Professional College of Poltava State Agrarian University. The event united teachers, students, experts from the Association of Milk Producers (AMP), the Advisory Center of AMP, and representatives of the USAID AGRO Program—for one goal: to train specialists who think modernly and act professionally.

Today, simply knowing theory is not enough. Farms need specialists who are not afraid of complex diagnoses and who can work with high technologies. And this focus became the star of the program!

Students not only listened to important reports on modern requirements for dairy farm operations, including European integration standards in animal welfare, effective herd reproduction, genetic selection, and the role of practical education in forming professional skills, but they also practically mastered modern methods of cow reproduction using ultrasound.

During the practical session led by Valerii Lototskyi, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences and Director of the Advisory Center of AMP, students tried their hand as specialists in diagnosing cow pregnancy using ultrasound. Modern equipment, live contact with animals, and the opportunity to perform manipulations themselves evoked genuine excitement among the students.

Such educational initiatives show that Ukrainian agrarian education is becoming closer to the real needs of the industry. Theory is combined with practice, and European standards are combined with Ukrainian experience and the inspiration of youth ready to develop dairy farming to a new level.

Alla Naumenko, Head of the Client Cooperation Department at AMP, emphasized that European integration requirements in the field of animal husbandry are primarily about responsibility and animal welfare. In EU countries, workers involved in keeping, transporting, or slaughtering cattle undergo mandatory training and certification, as understanding animal behavior and reducing stress are key to quality production. According to her, Ukraine is moving in the same direction, and education should be the foundation of these changes.

The event was organized within the framework of the Project "Support for Value-Added Milk Production by Peasant Farms," implemented with the support of the American people, provided through the AGRO Program.
