Increase of imports of breeding heifers and cows to Ukraine: plus 8% for 10 months

For ten months of 2021, Ukrainian dairy farms imported 3,644 heads breeding heifers and cows, which is 8% more than in the same period last year.

This was reported by analyst of the Association of Milk Producers Volodymyr Andriiets, according to the State Customs Service.

At the same time, exports of breeding cattle fell more than twice this year compared to 2020.

The increase of imports of breeding cattle is undoubtedly a positive phenomenon for the dairy sector of Ukraine, as it contributes to faster genetic progress and overall increase of herd productivity. Hopes, which in 2020 in Ukraine amounted to 6500-6600 kg of milk per dairy cow, largely depend on the genetic potential. While in the EU, our main competitors, this figure was 9000 - 10 000 kg.

Partially reimbursed for the cost of purchased genetic resources is strategically important for the maintenance and development of domestic dairy farms. It remains one of the most popular areas of state support for livestock (Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine №107), because the return on investment in the purchase of livestock should be expected no earlier than three years.

"Therefore, during the discussion of state support for the agro-industrial complex for 2022 in the working group of the "Agro Association" under the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, AMP stressed the need to maintain the direction and significantly increase its funding," said general director of the of the Association of Milk Producers Hanna Lavreniuk.
