Preserve the Ministry of Agrarian Policy: Ukrainian Agricultural Associations Appeal to the President

The Association of Milk Producers of Ukraine, along with 36 other agricultural associations, has appealed to the President of Ukraine regarding the inadvisability of liquidating the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

In the extremely difficult conditions of war, the agricultural sector remains the foundation of Ukraine's economy:

  • It forms 15% of GDP.
  • It generates over 60% of foreign currency earnings.
  • It is a key source of filling the budget and financing the army.

Abolishing a separate specialized ministry would be a strategic mistake. We are convinced that an agrarian state must have its own Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, which will:

  • Develop state policy in the agricultural sector.
  • Defend the interests of producers at the government level and in international negotiations.
  • Ensure food security and the stability of the agricultural sector during wartime.

Today, more than ever, it is crucial for Ukraine to have a strong sectoral representative for equal and professional negotiations regarding European integration, the opening of EU markets, and the protection of the trade interests of Ukrainian farmers.

All leading agricultural countries in the world have separate ministries dealing exclusively with agriculture — the USA, Canada, Turkey, and EU countries. Ukraine must not lose its specialized ministry at this critical time.

The experience of 2019, when the Ministry of Agrarian Policy was liquidated, demonstrated the harmfulness of such a decision for the industry. We are grateful that the ministry was restored in 2020.

The Association of Milk Producers urges: The Ministry of Agrarian Policy must remain a separate central executive body.
