Ukraine Presents Good Agricultural Practice Handbook for Farmers

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, together with the EU project "Institutional and Policy Reform of Small-Scale Agriculture in Ukraine" (EU4SmallFarms), held a webinar presentation of the practical handbook "Rules of Good Agricultural Practice for Farmers, Producers, and Land Users in Ukraine."

This handbook is a system of voluntary recommendations for efficient and environmentally responsible farming, aimed at protecting water, soil, and air.

Its development is a practical step in fulfilling Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU. The handbook is fully adapted to both current Ukrainian legislation and key European norms, including the Nitrates Directive. It is worth noting that the creation of such voluntary rules is a standard and mandatory practice in EU member states.

"The implementation of Good Agricultural Practice is our conscious step towards the sustainable development of the agricultural sector. This handbook provides farmers with practical tools to increase efficiency, which strengthens the competitiveness of Ukrainian products, makes businesses more profitable, and more resilient to environmental challenges. The Ministry will support the dissemination of these practices, as our priority is modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible agriculture," said Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, addressing the event participants.

Key sections of the handbook were presented to the event participants, covering:

  • Soil fertility and nutrient management, including how to effectively manage nitrogen and phosphorus to reduce losses and increase profitability.
  • Safe handling of fertilizers and plant protection products, including rules for storing silage, manure, pesticides, and fuels and lubricants.
  • Practical advice on field work, tillage, and fertilizer application to minimize contamination risks.
  • The importance of biodiversity conservation and the implementation of elements of regenerative agriculture.

The document was developed within the EU4SmallFarms project, funded by the European Union, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine. Expert and methodological support was provided by the State Institution "Institute for Soil Protection of Ukraine" and the NGO Center for Environmental Initiatives "Ecoaction."
