Over the last month, several dairy products in Ukraine have seen price decreases, including drinking milk, sour cream, drinking yogurt, butter, and "Hollandskyi," Maasdam, and Mozzarella cheeses. Prices for curd and "Ukrainskyi" cheese remain relatively stable. Low domestic demand due to declining purchasing power is restraining price hikes. Dairy processors are stimulating sales through supermarket promotions and discounts. Demand for domestic cheeses is being suppressed by increasing dairy imports.
It is likely that prices may rise for exported dairy products, as raising domestic prices is risky due to falling demand. Oleksandr Haiy, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy, suggests food prices in Ukraine could grow by 8–10%, as producers factor fuel and fertilizer costs into final prices. Diesel and fertilizer prices have risen due to the war in the Persian Gulf, disruptions in global oil, urea, and ammonia supplies, and rising energy costs.
To improve the sales of domestic dairy products, the Government should support Draft Law 6068-d on countering unfair trade practices by retail chains and implement protective measures against surging dairy imports. Action is needed to combat "grey" imports into Ukraine. Furthermore, food for humanitarian kits and other state purposes should be purchased exclusively from domestic producers.
